Croatia has the largest tourism percentage of GDP in the EU. It also has some outstanding technology. The two meet in Zagreb later this month at the 3T Tourism Travel and Tech conference.
Croatia has the largest share of tourism income in gross domestic product (GDP) from all the EU countries, according to research conducted by the HGK (Croatian Chamber of Economy) „Tourism 2016″.
Tourism is an industry in Croatia which has constant growth despite years of stagnation and economic crisis, and it accounts for 6-7% of total employment in the county. Last year’s record level of overnight stays obviously had a positive impact on state budget. Some EU countries perceived as tourist destinations have a much smaller share of tourism in GDP than Croatia (Cyprus 12,8% and Malta 14%). At the same time, Croatia’s share is18%. Research has shown that a lot of countries who earn more than Croatia in absolute terms have quite a small share of tourism in GDP (example of Netherlands which earns 50% more than Croatia in absolute terms but has 1,8% share in overall GDP).
These findings lead to the question “What will the Mediterranean be in 5 or 10 years?” For someone working in tourism or planning to do so in future, this is the essential question because all new trends and technologies directly affect the tourism business.
