Another milestone for the Croatian shipbuilding industry.
The Brodotrogir shipyard from Trogir has delivered a 167-metre-long bow section of a ship, a huge structure which dominated the whole town. It has been transported to a ship which can carry large and heavy cargos, and has now started its eighteen-day voyage, reports Poslovni.hr on July 25, 2018.
Nine days ago, the section was launched at the Trogir shipyard. “We have the three firsts with this ship. We have built an icebreaker for the first time. We have welded very thick, high-strength metal sheets for the first time. And we have launched a ship on the bow for the first time ever,” said Danko Končar, the owner of Brodotrogir.
The construction of the section was very demanding, as evidenced by the fact that this will be the first ship of its kind in the world. The complexity refers to the technical characteristics that needed to be met in accordance with the requirements of the ARC 7 ice class, which implies cargo transportation and navigation in the toughest polar conditions.
The difference in the construction compared to other types of ships is reflected in the use and installation of stronger and thicker materials, especially in the bow part of the hull which, due to the ice and low temperatures of up to -50 degrees Celsius, must be built according to specific standards and with the application of special technologies.
During the navigation along the world’s coasts and seas, this unusual symbiosis of a heavy lifter and a special bow will surely draw a great deal of attention, just like it did in Trogir in the past few days. After the arrival in Finland, where the bow section will be connected to the stern section, the total length of the Arctic tanker will be about 230 metres.
The bow part of the cargo ARC 7 icebreaker has been constructed by Croatian Shipbuilding Trogir for the Arctech Helsinki Shipyard (which is part of United Shipbuilding Corporation).
