Personal ID cards with e-signature will also include a mobile m-signature which will allow citizens to log in to m-banking services.
The electronic signature (e-signature), which accompanies new personal ID cards which are being issued to citizens of Croatia, will be expanded with a mobile m-signature by the end of next year, said Kristina Leko Kuštrak, the head of business operations of AKD, the government-owned company specialising in the production of documents, smart cards and high-security printed matter as well as the implementation of support IT infrastructure and integral solutions, reports Poslovni.hr on November 17, 2017.
She pointed out that, according to her knowledge, the government planned to adopt regulations in September 2018 which would allow e-signatures to be used on mobile phones and tablets.
“We are preparing to technically enable e-signatures to be put in the cloud, which would allow citizens to use new personal ID cards to log in to mobile banking and other services,” said Leko Kuštrak.
She explained that such solution would expand the possibilities for electronic business operations in Croatia. Currently, more than 1.44 million citizens have new personal ID cards, and this figure is increased by 40,000 to 50,000 new cards every month. In the next four years, it is entirely possible that all old ID cards could be replaced with the new ones, which also include an e-signature.
“From the end of 2018, all new ID cards will automatically include the m-signature as well, and we are currently debating whether this will be additionally charged. All those who replace their ID cards prior to this deadline will be able to activate an m-signature together with the existing e-signature for free,” added Leko Kuštrak.
Next year, the authorities also plan to adopt a concept similar to e-Residency which exists in Estonia. At present, banks within the European Union can open a bank account to citizens from another member states who come to one of their branchs. But, starting from September 2018, thanks to new EU regulations, this will also be possible to accomplish via the internet. This could bring new business oppotinities to banks to Croatia and, thanks to the m-signature, to the citizens as well.
