July the 31st, 2024 – Could the very first Croatian net zero housing be closer to coming to fruition than imagined? It seems so.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, an Austrian delegation led by His Excellency Dr. Markus Wuketich, Ambassador of Austria to Croatia, and Mr. Gerhard Schlattl, head of Advantage Austria in Croatia, paid a visit to the Wienerberger plant in Karlovac.
The delegation was welcomed by Tin Ban, operations director for the Southeastern Europe area, and Tomislav Franko, commercial director and member of the Management Board of Wienerberger Adriatic. The visit included a tour of the Porotherm brick production plant in Karlovac, which has been part of the Wienerberger Group for 27 years now.
The delegation got better acquainted with the innovative and sustainable solutions that Wienerberger implements in its production, emphasising their firm commitment to the ESG strategy and sustainable development.
600 people are employed across croatia and slovenia
Wienerberger Adriatic, which is otherwise headquartered in Zagreb, is a leading producer of construction materials and infrastructure across Croatia and the region, with a significant number of production facilities located here in Croatia and across the border in Slovenia. In total, it employs more than 600 people and achieves an annual turnover of over 135 million euros within the companies Wienerberger, Semmelrock, Vargon and Pipelife.
The company continuously invests in the modernisation of its facilities, including their factory in Karlovac, where high-quality Porotherm blocks are produced, known for their outstanding insulation properties and energy efficiency.
During the meeting between the aforementioned Austrian delegation and Wienerberger representatives, they discussed potential investments that would further strengthen the factory’s competitiveness, improve production capacities and increase efficiency, bringing new opportunities for growth and development.
Contributing to environmental protection through decarbonisation, biodiversity conservation and resource management projects is what Wienerberger claims to be the most proud of. Their ESG strategy includes targets for recycling, water and waste management, and achieving climate-neutral construction by 2050. They are planning significant investments in the modernisation and decarbonisation of their production facilities, including renewable energy sources.
croatian net zero housing – 100% renewable energy
By 2026, 75% of the company’s sales will come from climate-neutral systems, confirming its commitment to sustainable development and combating climate change.
Wienerberger also announced their plan to build the first Croatian net zero housing (homes which have no carbon emissions whatsoever), using materials with low CO2 emissions and 100% renewable energy. Smart energy and water management and innovative building systems will all be key elements of the project involving Croatian net zero housing, which was briefly presented during the visit.
This visit once again emphasised the importance of international cooperation and knowledge exchange in the field of sustainable development and innovation.
