The initiative expands the capabilities offered by Google Maps and provides railroad travelers with useful information.
In cooperation with Croatian Railways Passenger Services, Google has provided its users with free information on the possibilities of travel by train in Croatia via Google Maps, as part of the Google Maps Transit service, reports Zimo.hr on January 15, 2018.
By typing in a travel route in Google Maps, travelers can now plan their journeys on Croatian Railways trains according to valid timetables. This initiative is the result of the collaboration between Google and Croatian Railways Passenger Services, which expands the capabilities offered by Google Maps and provides railroad users with useful information. Google’s mission is to make Google Maps more comprehensive, accurate and helpful to millions of users who travel to their destinations by buses, trains, subways or trams.
“We are delighted to welcome Croatian Railways Passenger Services to the Google Maps Transit service,” said the director of Google for the Adriatic region Joško Mrndže. “Google Maps seeks to help users in exploring the world around them. In order to help people move faster and easier in the local environment, we would like to provide them not just with geographic map information, but also with public transportation information.”
Google Maps provides travel information from nearly 7,000 carriers with more than 3.8 million stations and in 20,000 cities in 78 countries. In Zagreb, the public transport information is also available.
“The presence of Croatian Railways on Google Maps provides for better visibility and reach to potential passengers who are users of this platform and who did not necessarily consider the possibility of traveling by train for their planned trip. Additionally, Google Maps Transit service offers additional ability to update with real-time information, which is particularly important to inform passengers in the event of incidents which can cause delays, which we plan to implement as soon as possible,” said Marko Knežević, head of the Infrastructure Services Department at Croatian Railways Passenger Services.
Google Maps is used by more than a billion users, with more than half of them using mobile devices. Google Maps Transit service is available through the Google Maps app for Android and iOS systems.
