Duga Resa – Smart Town Focusing on the Future

The small town near Karlovac offers high quality of life to its citizens.

Duga Resa, a small town with about 10,000 inhabitants near Karlovac, is slowly but surely working on its vision of the future. It has focused on the IT sector, environmental-friendly development and is trying to convince young people to stay living in the town, reports RTL on February 6, 2017.

This town has by far the fastest internet in Croatia. But, that is not all. For example, there is also the oldest kindergarten in Croatia. It was founded about 90 years ago, but this is not the only interesting thing about it. There is no waiting list for children and all children can be enrolled without any problems, which is quite unusual for Croatia.

In the premises of the Duga Resa town school, they are about to begin the construction of a large IT start-up centre. At 800 square metres of space, businesses will have at their disposal offices, a conference room, high speed internet connection and a 3-D laboratory with a 3-D printer and scanner – for just 450 kuna of monthly rent.

“Our business is a start-up, and it is perfectly normal that we will used an office space in which we can get the right working conditions, computers and an internet connection under favourable conditions”, said entrepreneur Tomislav Bišćan.

The town authorities have purchased an old mill and will turn it into a hydroelectric plant that will fully satisfy the needs of the public lighting system of Duga Resa. Also, they plan to build a special area on the bank opposite the mill, so that all citizens can enjoy swimming in the river.

Deputy Mayor Tomislav Boljar pointed out that, however, the citizens of Duga Resa currently do not live as good as they used to ten or twenty years ago. “The aim of all these projects that we have ready is to revitalize the town, to do a rebranding of the entire region.”

Everything they have done so far has been done all by themselves, without any help. “Everything that we have achieved shows us that we are on the right track and that in about ten years Duga Resa will look completely different.”
