ZAGREB, February 6, 2018 – The Croatian Economic and Social Council (GSV) on Monday discussed plans for the convergence to the euro, and concluded that the benefits would be higher than disadvantages, calling on the authorities to implement necessary reforms to this end.
The Council’s chairman, Ivan Mišetić (the Croatian Employers’ Association, HUP) said that the discussion focused on the preparedness of the national economy for the introduction of the euro as the sole national currency.
Mišetić told the press that participants in the discussion mainly underscored the greater benefits than negative consequences.
GSV Vice-Chairman, unionist Miroslav Hraščanec, said that the best time to adopt the euro would be a period of stable economy and to avoid doing that in crises.
Union representatives were reassured that the euro adoption would not lead to prices climbing and the experiences of Slovenia and Slovakia showed that only minor price corrections could be expected. Let’s hope that that will be the same in Croatia too, the unionist, Hraščanec said.
Some other participants in the discussion said that in order to adopt the euro, Croatia had to carry out large-scale and braver reforms.
