ZAGREB, May 19, 2018 – A 200-metre-long car ferry was launched at the “3rd May” shipyard in the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka on Saturday, the first launch in a year.
The ferry was ordered by the Auto Marine Transport company and was the second such vessel commissioned by the same company, which is registered in the Cayman Islands. With a capacity of 17,000 tonnes, the ferry can carry 7,000 cars on 13 decks. It is 32 metres wide and can develop a maximum speed of 19 knots.
On behalf of the ordering party, the ceremony was addressed by Kristian Siem, CEO of Siem Car Carrier Industry. The ferry was christened Siem Ashanti by Julia Osei Tutu, the wife of the king of Ghana’s Ashanti province.
The vessel was to have been launched last summer, but the launch was delayed because of the shipyard’s business problems.
