ZAGREB, March 8, 2018 – The project to build a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Omišalj on the island of Krk is environmentally acceptable on the condition that appropriate measures are taken to protect the environment and monitor the situation on the ground, a commission in charge of assessing the environmental impact of the project decided at its third session held at the Environmental Protection and Energy Ministry on Thursday.
“Of the total of 16 commission members present, 14 voted in favour and two (the representative of Omišalj Municipality and the representative of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County) voted against,” the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Energy said in a statement.
The 16-member advisory commission made its decision on the project based on an environmental impact study made by Ekonerg d.o.o., a company authorised by the ministry to prepare the relevant documentation.
A protest against the LNG terminal was held outside the ministry while the commission was in session. The rally was organised by the Green Action NGO and was supported by Omišalj municipal head Mirela Ahmetović, Živi Zid MPs Ivan Vilibor Sinčić and Ivan Pernar, the Eko Kvarner association and the Our Adriatic civil initiative.
They all said that the project was unprofitable and would pollute the environment, calling on the government to reject it.
