The skies of Croatia have never been busier, reports Croatian Air Traffic Control on August 15, 2016.
These are boom times for the airports of Croatia, and urgent expansions of airport terminals are moving to completion in Zagreb and Dubrovnik, with Split due to start construction.
The reason? Siginficantly increased traffic to these airports, but there has also been an increase in overflights through Croatian airspace, with the Croatian Air Traffic Control reporting that there were a record number of flights in Croatian airspace in July 2016 – 67,537, or an increase of 5.2%.
The vast majority (84%) were overflights, with 15% inbound and outbound, and less than 2% interntal flights. July 30 was the peak with more than 2,500 flights in a single day.
Of the inbound and outbound flights, Split was the top destination, accounting for 30%, a fact borne out by it becoming the first Croatian airport to handle more than 500,000 passengers in a month last month, followed by Zagreb at 25% and Dubrovnik at 21%.
