A touch of Dalmatia in Quebec.
As Darko Bicak/Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 22nd of August, 2018, six pontoons will protect the port of Saguenay in the Canadian province of Quebec from waves. Their dimensions are 6x20x2.4 metres.
The Šibenik-based company Marinetek NCP, which is a joint venture of the NCP Shipyard in Šibenik and a Finnish corporation under the same name, has recently completed the production of the six floating concrete structures for the construction of a pier for cruise ships in Saguenay Port in the Canadian province of Quebec, the Croatian-made structures are due to be set up over the coming days.
These are otherwise the largest standard breakwater elements of their kind, which have been produced for the very first time in the pontoon plant located in Marinela, in the Dalmatian coastal town of Šibenik. As was clarified by Boris Miškić, the director of Marinetek NCP, these pontoons are the final result of a complex process which actually began two whole years ago.
“Marinetek’s management decided to begin with a detailed design of new breakwater elements. As a result, a concrete monolithic element of 20 metres in length and 2.4 meters in height, was designed,” stated Miškić.
The design was carried out by Port Tech – FCG Design and Engineering Helsinki, in cooperation with Marinetek’s domestic experts and designers, which is a licensed state institute for such marine construction.
The model testing was done at the Croatian Hydrographic Institute in the capital of Zagreb, and then at the Finnish Institute of Technical Research Centre of Finland. The final blessing was given by the Croatian register of ships from Split.
As we reported some time ago, Marinetek NCP already set up its sailing pontoons in glamorous Monaco back in May, and Miškić expects that these protective pontoons will also be sought after on the Adriatic and across the Mediterranean as a whole.
