March 19, 2024 – Last Friday, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic caused quite a lot of confusion on the Croatian political scene this past week, first by choosing the date of the election, and then with the news that shocked everyone: he is planning to be a candidate for Prime Minister in the 2024 Croatian elections, and wants to carry the SDP list in the 1st constituency.

The reactions to this move are not diminishing. As Index writes, however, the Constitutional Court has decided that the Croatian President, Zoran Milanović, may not participate in the political activities of any political party, as announced by the President of the Constitutional Court, Miroslav Šeparović.

After that, SDP President Peđa Grbin held a press conference, stating that he would not say Milanovic’s name. Milanovic also spoke and called the constitutional judges illiterate gangsters.

Here are the key events and statements since:

  • The Constitutional Court issued a warning to Milanović. He was banned from being on the electoral list and participating in the election campaign in any way while he is still the president
  • SDP’s Ivan Račan: Let someone who talks to him inform Plenković that he is leaving
  • Plenković: “This is an attempted coup. Grbin is the former president of the SDP”
  • Milanovic regarding the warning and threat of the Constitutional Court: “Illiterate peasants and gangsters, we will deal with them”
  • Grbin addressed the public: “We must not say that Milanovic is our candidate but after the election, we will shout it out”
  • In his first reaction to the Constitutional Court’s warning on Facebook, Milanovic writes: “Rivers of justice are coming!”
  • Dalija Orešković calls out Vladimir Šeks who, as she said, called her a poisonous snake
  • Tomislav Karamarko, the former head of the HDZ, appears at a HDZ meeting. Milanović attacks him, and Karamarko proposes to Plenković to put together a large right-wing coalition
