February the 17th, 2026 – Croatian food prices continue to remain among Europe’s highest, with the country being more expensive than Vienna.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, in a relatively short period of five years, the producer price of vegetables has increased by 51%, fruit by about 40%, cattle by 98%, and eggs by more than 100%. Croatian food prices are therefore still among Europe’s highest, as confirmed by the experiences of those who have lived abroad, such as Vienna, where prices are significantly lower, reports Dnevnik.hr.
This winter, statistics have managed to record a drop in some prices. For example, the price of pork fell by 19%, vegetables by 6.7%, and fruit by about 15%. Lower apple prices have come as the result of two natural disasters that have increased the share of the second and third classes in production.
Experts and producers have warned that Croatian agriculture is very much at risk of fully losing stability. Croatia is no longer self-sufficient when it comes to apple production alone, and the economic sustainability of agricultural sectors, such as pig farming, is becoming increasingly difficult.
Producers are currently calling for solutions to be found to protect domestic production and ensure the availability of food to consumers, as Croatian food prices are continuing to be a burning topic and there is absolutely no reason as to why they’re among Europe’s highest.
