July the 15th, 2024 – Certain Croatian product prices have shot up in price in a completely unjustifiable way. One TikTok user compared prices for those goods in New York and at home.
TikTok grew from a platform for kids to showcase ridiculous dances to a social media giant gaining more popularity for shorter video content of all kinds than YouTube. For all the less than reliable content posted there, there are some gems and discoveries. One TikTok user spending time in New York discovered something that will raise the eyebrows of those of us already questioning the basis of Croatian product prices of late.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, TikTok user @alekscro recently published a video on TikTok in which he shows the prices of Croatian products at the Euro Market store, located in New York’s Astoria district, known for its products from our region. The well known shop offers a wide selection of not only Croatian products but those from all over the world. Of the Croatian products, burek, ajvar and many other items are on sale, and the TikToker compared the prices with those in Croatia, as reported by Klik.hr.
According to him, Croatian product prices in this store are for the most part similar to those in Croatia when you take into account the tax that is additionally calculated at the cash register in New York, and amounts to 8.5%. For example, Podravka’s soup costs 1.20 dollars without VAT, which in fairness, is very close to the price in Croatia.
The video caused numerous reactions from users. One user noticed that Cedevita in Pula costs as much as 8 euros, which is actually more expensive than the price for the same Croatian product in New York! Many other users commented that it is sad that there seems to be a greater Croatian product selection over in America than in Croatia itself.
“More choices for our stuff in America than here in Croatia, sadly,” wrote one user.
