March the 25th, 2025 – The very first Croatian retirement villages boasting prefabricated houses in Sisak-Moslavina County have sprung up, with more in the works.
As Mirovina/Jasmina Grguric Zanze writes, the first Croatian retirement villages have sprung up in Sisak-Moslavina County. Three villages in Glina, Petrinja and Sisak boast 166 prefabricated 35 to 45 square metre houses, and more will be built in Kutina. They all have terraces and green areas for a garden or flower bed, and they will provide care for the elderly in the same way as in nursing homes do.
“We’re the first county in Croatia to launch a project like this, so we can say that it’s truly unique, because the houses we have built will be used in a long term way. The initial idea was to help earthquake victims and provide them with adequate accommodation until their homes are rebuilt. Given the fact that Croatia’s elderly population is growing, there was a need for additional capacities intended for retirees, which we ultimately combined into one large project,” explained County Prefect Ivan Celjak.
Baustela.hr writes that these modern low-energy houses range in size from 35 to 45 square metres and are fully equipped with furniture and technology, as well as a parking space. Depending on the size, they can accommodate up to four people. Some of the houses are also fully adapted for people with disabilities and reduced mobility.
The constructed settlements are currently being used for temporary housing for people whose homes were damaged in the earthquake in 2020. Once the reconstruction of their homes is complete, the settlements will become part of the growing number of Croatian retirement villages.
“The temporary residents of the settlement are very satisfied and we’re pleased that we’ve been able to provide them with quality accommodation while they wait for the completion of the renovation of their homes. When the temporary residents return to their renovated homes, this will be the most modern of the Croatian retirement villages,” assured County Prefect Celjak.
As mentioned previously, Sisak-Moslavina County will also add to the list of Croatia’s retirement villages in Kutina, consisting of 25 houses.
