February the 1st, 2024 – I’m known for constantly praising how good roads in this country are, and one Croatian road, specifically from Senj to Karlobag, has been voted the most gorgeous in all of Europe. It’s also one of the most dangerous.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, there are many roads in Croatia that are absolutely stunning – in the sense of the views on offer out of the window, and in the sense of how perfectly maintained they are despite having been carved into the side of karst mountains. The Senj to Karlobag road, while known as being among the most dangerous, is also the most beautiful in Europe.
“It’s the most challenging road for motorcyclists, especially those who ride sport bikes. The fact is that people travel along it to see how quickly they can arrive in Karlobag, and which bend can be overcome. It’s not something to brag about, but people do love it, it’s an adrenaline rush,” motorcyclist Jure Miškulin told HRT.
“Motorists used to be able to drive along this Croatian road pretty quickly, but driving has changed a lot because there’s now a lot more traffic and the risk is far greater. Sometimes you’d end up making a mistake, you’d enter a corner at too high a speed and end up on the other side of the road, but everything went well because there weren’t as many cars on the road. Today, mistakes like that are much less likely to be forgiven, and everyone knows that we can’t drive at 50 km/h, which is the speed limit,” explained one motorcyclist.
