The 19th annual Croatian Sommelier Championship has taken place in the Meliá Coral Hotel in the Istrian resort town of Umag, reports Glas Istre on December 5, 2015.

This year the championship was won by Filip Savić, head sommelier of the Wine Vault Restaurant at Rovinj’s Hotel Monte Mulino, who competed in the finals with Ivan Jug from Bistro Apetit in Zagreb, and last year’s winner Siniša Lasan of Dubrovnik’s Restaurant Proto. Filip Savić is no stranger to the winner’s podium, having won the title once already in 2013.

The competition involves not just a test of the contestants wine knowledge, but also topics including food and wine pairing, presentation and serving skills. It was organised by the Croatian Sommelier Club a member club of the International Association of Sommeliers (ASI). Founded in 1993, the Croatian Sommelier Club now counts over 500 members.

The winner of the competition receives an all expenses paid trip to the Champagne region of France, with cellar visits and guided champagne tastings.
