July the 29th, 2023 – Croatian sunflower damage is almost at 100% following the devastating storms which ravaged parts of the interior of the country recently.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the violent storms that ravaged parts of continental Croatia last week left behind devastating consequences, took lives and left numerous practical problems.

The sheer extent of that damage is still being added up, and what is particularly worrying is the situation in the agriculture sector, for which help is being sought. The houses and other properties owned by people in Eastern Croatia suffered significant damage, and farmers suffered serious losses, writes Pixsell.

Croatian sunflower damage stands at almost 100%

Sunflowers, one of the most important agricultural crops in the Republic of Croatia, suffered the most. Almost 100 percent of Croatian sunflower crops were destroyed after the storms brought ice and hail with them. In Andrijaševci in Vukovar-Srijem County, sunflower fields were completely destroyed. As the farmers pointed out, there will no longer be any income from Croatian sunflower crops in that area, and had the storms not struck, the harvest would have been about four tonnes.

The state has promised to step in and offer help

Agriculture Minister Marija Vučković recently commented on the large amount of agricultural damage that remained after the storms. She emphasised that there is a legal procedure that must be followed now, but that the state will take care of helping all those in the sector who have suffered losses. This applies mostly to the areas of Vukovar-Srijem, Osijek-Baranja and Brod-Posavina as they have suffered the most.

In addition to agriculture, the storms caused enormous damage to other sectors as well. Animal husbandry facilities suffered losses, and forestry farms also suffered significant damage. Around one million trees were either destroyed completely or damaged to a high degree.
