The Queen was the first and Anita the second. Then came Barun, trailed by Lucija. This is only part of the sparkling wines presented by Zagreb County on the 54th Agriculture Fair in Gornja Radgona in Slovenia.
Queen is a sparkling wine from the Kraljevina sort by the Puhelek-Purek family from Sveti Ivan Zelina, while Anita is made from Kraljevina, Chardonnay and Rhine Riesling by their neighbour Željko Kos. Barun Brut is made by Mara and Josip Barundić in Krašić from the Manzoni sort, while Lucija by Josip Rajaković, also from Krašić, from Yellow Muscat.
Also presented were the Mladina Poy Prestige and the Šember and Tomac families with pink sparkling wines from Black Pinot.
Sparkling wines were used to toast the wholesome promotion of Zagreb County to Slovenian partners, while the tasting of bubbles was preceded by the tasting of County brands such as Samobor salami, Dragec cheese, Grof ham…
Croatian wine makers also made their mark in the Open State Competition “Wine Slovenia Gornja Radgona,” winning three champion titles. The best rated was the Ice Traminer 2015 by Stjepan Đurinski from Kupljenovo near Zaprešić, the champion of sweet aromatic white wines. Among the semi sweet white wines the champion was again the Traminer 2015, but from the Mlinarić family cellar from Štrigova in Međimurje region, the origin of the champion in aromatic dry wines. This is the 2015 Sauvignon by Cmrečnjak.
The Radgona fair was a rare opportunity to meet all six wine queens of Zagreb County. The current queen Lucija Šember was in her gown and with a crown on her head as presenting county wines is part of her job description. Her predecessors helped her out in Radgona; Ivana Puhelek, Irena Majcenović, Ivana Rendulić, Nataša Puhelek and Kristina Vugrin, girls or young women who don’t need a crown to deal with wines and similar drinks at the Faculty of Agronomics, the Chamber of Agriculture, Zagreb County or in their own wineries and companies.
