ZAGREB, October 7, 2018 – Polls opened in Bosnia and Herzegovina general election at 0700 hours Sunday,
Slightly over 3.3 million people are eligible to vote for nearly 7,500 candidates from 58 political parties, coalitions and those running independently.
Voters will elect a new state parliament, assemblies in the two entities, ten cantonal assemblies within one of the entities – the mainly Bosniak and Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina – the presidency of the Bosnian Serb entity of Republika Srpska, and the three-member state presidency.
A total of 518 positions are up for election. Three are seats on the state presidency, 42 are for the state parliament, 98 are for the assembly of the Federation entity, 83 are for the assembly of the Republika Srpska and three are for the president and vice-presidents of Republika Srpska.
Approximately 6,500 national and international observers are overseeing the voting. Political parties taking part in the election sent as many as 60,000 of their own observers.
Polls close at 1900 hours and preliminary results are expected around midnight.
The last general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina were held in 2014 when the voter turnout was 54.47 per cent.
