The festival will include local wines with guests from Slavonia, good food and a night cycling event

It is well known that Krk Island is the homeland of the fine indigenous wine variety Žlahtina, but such nice things should always be repeated and confirmed. The summer manifestation “Popi’ i Pojedi” in Vrbnik does just that, being a common name for several events promoting local wine and food. They include local customs such as folklore and music.

Programmes are intended for all who reside in Kvarner during the tourism season, but the locals also take an active part. “Popi’ i Pojedi” encompasses three events on important tourism weekends during July and August, positioning Vrbnik as the eno-gastronomy centre of Kvarner tourism. The Žlahtina festival Razgon and Šurlica Days have already taken place successfully, and the traditional Krk Island Wine Days in the coming weekend will crown this summer series.

The ceremonial opening is set for Friday, August 25, in the Vrbnik Škujica Square, and in the evening hours of both days the entire old town will become a large music and theatre stage with fine food and drink. Considering the guests of Krk Island and Vrbnik this year come from the Osijek-Baranja County, there will also be Slavonian food and wine, with the performance of the folklore group VKD Frankopan, groups Brevis and Insula, trio Crikvenica, Mitja Tavčar Quarter and Darko Jurković Charlie trio, completed by the tambouritza band Hrvatski Sokoli. It will be a party and a curiosity.

Some call this wine festival a feast of ‘noble drink,’ held continuously since 2004, with a characteristic offer of local wines and visits from winemakers from other Croatian regions. Events are again set in various locations in Vrbnik – Škujica Square, Vrbnik Statut Place and the fish market, and to go along with wine tasting and domestic products fair is an exhibition of wine growing and winemaking equipment. For all who love to socialise, have fun and learn about wine and the history of this area in a competitive spirit, there will be a question session, a pub quiz on wine and Vrbnik, run by Croatian Television host Morana Zibar. Last year’s premier night recreational cycling event through the Vrbnik field was popular, so this coming Saturday the Vrbnik Wine & Bike night cycling event and wine tasting will start in the PZ Gospoja-Toljanić winery. Good luck to cyclists and to all good fun.
