Fire Breaks Out in Commercial Area in Rijeka, Flames Spreading to Konzum

Citizens are warned not to approach the site due to possible gas cylinder explosion

A commercial centre in Škurinje neighbourhood in Rijeka caught fire earlier tonight, reports Riječanin on February 18, 2018.

Fire brigades from Rijeka and Opatija are currently fighting the blaze which broke out around 9 pm in the warehouses of the company Elgrad d.o.o. in Osječka street. It’s not yet known what caused the fire to occur, but the fact that it broke out in warehouses that are mostly built of plastic materials makes the fire harder to extinguish.

Multiple fire brigades are trying to prevent the flames from spreading to the nearby shopping mall Fiume which houses a large Konzum centre. The police has issued a warning to citizens not to approach the site due to possible danger of gas cylinder explosion. Multiple detonations have been heard from the site thus far.
