Extreme climate conditions have brought about a faster ripening of grapes.

Istrian winemakers have their hands full these days, some have already begun with the first early harvests, others are still completing final preparations ahead of collecting the grapes from their vineyards. Harvests have already begun in Višnjan and Poreč area, and ahead of many the Peršurić winery has begun the harvest, Glas Istre reported on August 12, 2017.

Extreme climate conditions, meaning the absence of rain this summer and high night temperatures, have brought about a faster ripening of grapes and made Istrian winemakers to begin harvesting earlier than usual.

The Peršurić winery, known for its unique collection of Misal sparkling wines, began their harvest in the youngest vineyard sections alongside the very winery, where the Pinot Noir is planted. By pure coincidence, these vineyards in the Peršurić village belong to the cadastre district Bačva (barrel), indicating a long tradition and rich experience in producing wine in these areas.

This year the harvest at this location began 18 days earlier than in 2016, all to prevent damage to the vines and the drying of the grapes, which is in no way favourable for the production of sparkling wines. This young Pinot Noir will serve in part to produce special Misal Millenium and Misal Prestige sparklings, and the rest will be briefly macerated and become the basis for the quality Misal Rose. “According to current measurements, the first wines made from these grapes should be somewhat more structured and of more abundant taste,” cited the sparkling queen Ana Peršurić Palčić.

Other winemakers across Istria with similar conditions have also begun earlier harvests, while many await impatiently the first grapes which make them a living here.
