September the 23rd, 2026 – Another European heat dome at the end of September will bring about unusual heat levels, and it will also affect Croatia.
Yet another unseasonably warm spell will hit a large part of Europe at the end of September, and unusually high temperatures could persist into early October. According to the forecast by Severe Weather Europe, a strong area of high pressure will develop over the continent that will draw very warm air northward from the Mediterranean and northern Africa. Index reports that in parts of western, central and northern Europe the air temperature aloft will be 8 to 12 degrees higher than the average for this time of year. At the surface temperatures in many areas will exceed 25 degrees, and in places even 30 degrees, which is very unusual for the end of September and the beginning of October.

Such a weather pattern is often called a heat dome. It is a large and long-lasting area of high pressure that keeps warm air over the same area. The air sinks towards the ground, heats further and makes the formation of clouds more difficult, so high temperatures can last for days, and sometimes even weeks. The heatwave is expected to gradually spread across the continent by the end of September, and stable and dry weather could continue into early October. For southern Europe and the Balkans warmer air is expected from Saturday and the beginning of next week.
Temperatures in northern Italy and the central part of the Balkans should reach between 28 and 30 degrees. The warming will also affect Croatia. According to the maps, on Sunday the 27th of September in Croatia, the highest daily temperatures are mostly expected between 22 and 26 degrees. By Tuesday the 29th of September it will warm further so temperatures in parts of the country will rise to around 27 degrees. The most pronounced deviation from usual temperatures is expected over the Po Valley and Tuscany in neighbouring Italy, the northern and central part of the Balkans and Greece.

The greatest heat during this week is expected on the Iberian Peninsula. In central and southern Spain and Portugal temperatures will exceed 35 degrees, and from Thursday to Saturday in places they could approach 40 degrees. It will also be very warm in France. In the central part of the country temperatures around 35 degrees are expected, while in the south they could reach approximately 36 degrees. In the north of France and in the Benelux countries, temperatures hovering at around 30 degrees are expected over the weekend. Warm air will then spread towards Germany, Poland and the Baltic countries. In western, central and northern Germany temperatures from Sunday to the beginning of next week could reach between 27 and 29 degrees, and in places approach 30.

In England, the warming will be shorter, with temperatures mostly between 25 and 28 degrees. In Ireland and Scotland it will be significantly cooler, with temperatures mostly around 15 degrees. While a large part of the continent will be under the influence of warm and dry air, western Ireland, Scotland and southwestern Norway can expect very moist air from the Atlantic. By the beginning of October more than 150 millimetres of rain could fall locally there. Forecasts show that the warm period could continue into early October. Then the area of high pressure would expand further towards the north and east of Europe, and the largest deviations from usual temperatures could appear in Sweden and Finland.
