August the 6th, 2025 – A juvenile Eurasian griffon vulture who had been exhausted following a storm has been rescued on a beach in Krk.

As Morski writes, a rather unfortunate juvenile Eurasian griffon vulture was thankfully rescued near Trstika beach on the island of Krk recently, the Malinska-Dubašnica Municipality announced.

Employees of the company Dubašnica d.o.o. came across an exhausted young Eurasian griffon vulture that had sadly ended up being tossed into the sea owing to severe storms. Unluckier still, it seems as if this occurred during the bird’s very first flight, judging from his estimated age. Fortunately, the young but exhausted bird managed to get to the shoreline, where he was discovered by humans and quickly given assistance.

The young vulture was immediately handed over to the staff of the Griffon Vulture Rehabilitation Centre in Belo, where he did and will continue to receive all the necessary medical care and rehabilitation before release.

The Eurasian griffon vulture is otherwise one of the largest birds in all of Europe, with an impressive wingspan of up to 2.80 metres at full size. The Kvarner islands of Cres, Krk and Plavnik are home to one of the last populations of this species in not only Croatia but all of Europe.

These imposing but beautiful birds are vultures that play a very important role in the ecosystem, they are scavengers who remove dead animals from nature. Juvenile Eurasian griffon vultures like this one often fly for the first time ever during the months of July and August, and owing to wind and storms they often get lost or fall into the sea. Most are sadly not as fortunate as this juvenile Eurasian griffon vulture who ended up on a Krk because and is now in good hands and recovering from his ordeal.

“Thank you to everyone who cares for these magnificent creatures!”, they stated from the Municipality of Malinska-Dubašnica.
