VAU combines minimalistic design, traditional craftsmanship and high-tech manufacturing to create unique everyday objects.
VAU, Croatian brand of everyday metalware, has recently received international recognition by winning three German Design Awards for the exceptional design and production and pioneering contribution to the design industry, reports Jutarnji.hr on October 20, 2017.
This coveted international design award is given every year by the German Design Council. Renowned international design experts select award-winning products whose authentic design and high-quality production contribute to the development of the design industry in Germany and the world. The International Jury of Experts has awarded the German Design Award to Croatian company VAU for three products from their first collection: Triangle bottle opener, Curve letter opener and Circular candle holder, the latter receiving the special mention award.
Awarded VAU products
The Triangle Bottle Opener is designed in the form of an upright triangle that symbolizes stability and durability, which is additionally accentuated by the solid base.The relationship between the full volume and the empty space between creates a composition of several triangles. By combining function and aesthetics, the bottle opener is both a useful tool and a beautiful sculpture.
The Curve Letter Opener, made from solid metal with polished brass finish has a minimalist form with delicate lines that emphasise the elegant shape of the object which features a soft curve – at the point where the rectangular shape of the handle transforms into the triangular shape of the blade.
The Circular Candle Holder is designed in the form of concentric circles, symbolizing the nature’s universal principle of expansion, from the centre to the indefinite. The flame is symbolically located at the very centre of the object, which is surrounded the concentric circles, thus forming a dynamic composition.The concept of the item is inspired by the ancient ziggurat architecture. This candle holder comes in two sizes, one for a tea light and another for a regular vertical candle.
The entire collection is signed by the VAU design team and is inspired by universal symbols that extend through all aspects of life: nature, geometry, rituals and art, like concentric circles, pyramids, golden ratio and contrast/duality. These abstract symbols have been transformed into concrete products made of solid metal by combining traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.
VAU products remind us to slow down, enjoy our daily rituals and recognize the beauty of the little things that surround us. All products are developed and produced in their own factory in Croatia, which allows them the full overview of the whole process and the final product.
