Total Croatia News

A new addition to the Zagreb suburban train network.

The first suburban electric train which Končar produced for the Zagreb local transport network left the Dugo Selo station at 12.53 pm. The train connecting Dugo Selo, the Main Railway Station in Zagreb, and Savski Marof near the Slovenian border arrived at the Zagreb main station exactly 23 minutes later. Of the 44 new trains whose construction has been contracted, all of which should be produced by the end of 2017, ten trains have so far been delivered for regional transport, while this is the first train for urban-suburban transport, reports Vecernji List on October 9, 2015.

The train has 133 seats, while its total capacity is 505 passengers. It has two movable ramps for entry and exit of persons in wheelchairs, as well as dedicated space for bicycles. The maximum speed of the train is 160 kilometres per hour, but due to short distances between stations it never goes faster than 120 kilometres per hour.

The first run of the new commuter train was witnessed by Croatian prime minister Zoran Milanović, transport minister Siniša Hajdaš Dončić and the managers of Croatian Railways and Končar.

“I am very proud that this train is beginning to operate since it is a train for the 21st century, with modern technology, including free internet, and most importantly it is a Croatian product. Almost 90 percent of all parts in the train have been produced in Croatia. So, it is almost completely a Croatian product, produced at the Croatian company Končar and numerous subcontractors, including companies from Šibenik to Čakovec”, said minister Siniša Hajdaš Dončić.

According to the data published by the Passenger Transport branch of the Croatian Railways, in the first eight months of this year the urban and suburban transport in Zagreb recorded three million passengers, which is similar to the same period the year before. Every day, around 32,000 passengers use trains to reach and leave Zagreb.
