Međimurje county

October the 22nd, 2024 – Međimurje County doesn’t get half the press most other places across Croatia too, but this beautiful, green part of the country has a lot to brag about.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Međimurje County reported on Friday that they are the only county in all of the Republic of Croatia that exceeds 50 percent when it comes to proper waste separation. According to data from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition, 20 individual municipalities and localities across the rolling hills of Međimurje County are at the very top in terms of percentage of waste separation, as reported by tportal.

“This data in itself is so impressive that at first glance it’s clear that only Međimurje County has managed to actually reach the modern goals in this area thanks to the highly developed awareness of local people and efficient utility companies,” the press release states.

The first nine places in Croatia are occupied by Međimurje County municipalities and towns. The most outstanding of which the small municipality of Belica, which has managed to take first place in this regard for the fifth year in a row. Last year, the waste separation rate in the municipality of Belica stood at 73.70 percent. The top nine municipalities and towns are as follows: Domašinec, Sveta Matija, Dekanovec, Podturen, Donja Dubrava and Goričan, as well as the town of Prelog and the municipality of Strahoninec.

“The Republic of Croatia had the task of successfully recycling 50 percent of the total amount of collected municipal waste by 2020. Međimurje County well and truly exceeded that goal and is progressing towards the rate of 70 percent, which is the entire country’s target by the year 2030,” they pointed out from the continental Croatian county that rarely (and unjustly) gets the spotlight.
