Mini Tornado Hits Croatian Town of Split

Total Croatia News

Unusual weather occurence caused some material damage but fortunately no casualties were reported

A very unusually weather occurence in Split, Croatia on January 6, 2016. Cold front which passed over Split brining heavy rains and hale sotrms also created a small tornado in the bay between Čiovo and Split and around 4 PM it passed through town areas of Zvončac and Meje.

It had all the characteristic of a tornado, and it was quite lucky that it changed direction after reaching Meje when it hit Marjan hill and started to lose power. It then passed through Spinut and Skalice before it completely disappeared.

Along with this largest one, two smaller twisters formed above the sea but they never reached the shore. Even though mini tornados or twisters are not exactly rare in the Adriatic, they seldom occur this time of year and almost never reach the shores of Split. Before today, last similar weather anomaly, according to the official data of the meteorological observatory in Split, was recorded only once since 1946 when it started keeping records. And today, on the national holiday of Three kings, we got three twisters, so it is an event which is going to be remembered for years to come.

Material damage was reported since the tornado ripped trees, benches and traffic lights and some minor damage was also recorded in Meje primary school, but luckily there were no casualties.

Here are some of the photos and videos of the twister posted online.
