July the 1st, 2024 – Three new Zagreb bridges are set to be constructed, and Mayor Tomislav Tomašević has revealed the details.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, within the urban/spatial plan since the 1970s, three new Zagreb bridges have been planned in the western part of the city in the area from Jadranski most (Adriatic bridge) to Jankomir bridge.

“The current amendments to the city’s spatial plan, which were placed under public discussion from yesterday until July the 12th, retain all existing traffic corridors and planned bridges over the Sava River”, the City of Zagreb announced on Saturday. Večernji list was the first to publish details about the new plans and the three new Zagreb bridges currently being planned.

At the beginning of the public debate on the amendments to the plans, Mayor Tomislav Tomašević announced in a statement to the media that these amendments proposed changing the character of the “Eastern Jarun bridge” from a road bridge to a pedestrian-cycling structure. This is because it is very close to Jadranski most, which is a road and tram bridge. The impossibility of a road connection to that bridge on the southern side also needed to be borne in mind.

The pedestrian and bicycle bridge east of Jarun lake connects the sports facilities of the Arena, Mladost and RSC Jarun, as well as the residents of the urban settlements of Lanište and Jarun. It’s therefore necessary to make an architectural-urban tender for that bridge. With the resolution of property-legal relations implied, the planned deadline for the construction of that particular bridge is the end of 2027.

The remaining two road bridges to the west of that bridge are the “Western Jarun Bridge” and the “Savska Opatovina Bridge”, both of which are necessary considering the size of the city and its further development. This is especially the case when bearing in mind the accelerated residential construction in the Stenjevec district. However, if the existing population density in the city districts of Podsused Vrapče, Stenjevec and Trešnjevka jug is taken into account, the city’s administration believes that the construction of the “Western Jarun Bridge” is a higher priority. That bridge is also currently the subject of a traffic study commissioned by the City of Zagreb.

“The Western Jarun bridge is intended for both road and tram transport along with pedestrians and cyclists. It is strategically important for the establishment of a tram network to the future National Children’s Hospital in Blato, and in order to significantly improve the transport connectivity of the entire western part of the city. We plan to build the Western Jarun Bridge and put it into function by the end of 2028, taking into account the conducted architectural tender and the status of all property-legal relations,” revealed Mayor Tomašević.

“Regarding the bridge in Savska Opatovina”, it’s estimated that due to the worsened status of property-legal relations, the need for an architectural-urban planning competition and the construction of connecting roads, this road bridge will be able to be built in 2031 at the earliest”, they concluded.
