September the 15th, 2026 – A multi-million euro project is set to result in a brand new Zagreb health centre with a capacity for 24,000 patients.
The City of Zagreb has launched a public procurement procedure for the construction of the Zagreb West (Zapad) Health Centre, specifically the Špansko clinic at Matije Vlačića Ilirika Street 2, valued at 18 million euros excluding VAT. Hana Ivkovic Simicic/VL reports for Poslovni that the residents of the western part of Zagreb will get a new, modern health centre that will significantly improve the accessibility and quality of primary healthcare services and bring together a wide range of health services in a single location.
“By constructing the new clinic in Špansko, we want to provide residents of this part of the city with more accessible and higher-quality healthcare in modern premises adapted to citizens’ needs. The new clinic will serve around 24,000 residents of the Špansko neighbourhood, as well as other residents of the Stenjevec city district,” Mayor Tomislav Tomašević emphasised. The new clinic will be built with one underground and three above-ground floors, with a total gross floor area of more than 5,800 m². The building is designed so that patients can use health services more simply, quickly and efficiently. The ground floor will house the main entrances and public facilities, while the upper floors will contain consulting rooms, waiting areas and other medical spaces. The underground floor will accommodate the radiology department with X-ray, CT, mammography and dental X-ray, along with technical and auxiliary spaces.
The construction of the health centre will significantly expand the range of health services. In addition to the existing general/family medicine, dental and school medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology and patronage (home-care) services, as well as a pharmacy, the centre will introduce physical medicine and rehabilitation, occupational and sports medicine, radiology, a medical-chemical laboratory, and specialist outpatient clinics. The new health centre in Špansko has been designed to the nZEB (nearly zero-energy building) standard. It will use heat pumps for heating and cooling, and an 85 kW photovoltaic power plant will be installed on the roof. More than 60 percent of the surrounding area will be greened and landscaped, and the new car park will provide 70 parking spaces, the City detailed. Covered porches and landscaped pedestrian approaches will connect the building with the surrounding green areas and footpaths.
“Particular emphasis has been placed on accessibility and functionality. The building will be fully adapted for people with reduced mobility and persons with disabilities, with adapted parking spaces, two lifts and accessible sanitary facilities. In order to ensure continuity of healthcare for citizens, the work of the existing clinic will not be interrupted during construction. After the completion of the public procurement procedure and the selection of the contractor, the start of works is expected at the beginning of 2027.”
