okCitizens’ Initiative Advocates New Road Between Trogir and Omiš

A citizens’ initiative appeals to the President in Dalmatia.

Citizens’ Initiative for the Road Between Trogir and Omiš near Split has been calling for years for the construction of the road which would make life much easier for residents who daily travel from Split to the south, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on August 11, 2015.

The queues are especially long during the high tourist season and the 30 kilometres long journey from Split to Omiš often turns into several hours long torture. But, as loudly as they warn about the importance of solving the biggest traffic jam in the country, it seems that the cries of Dalmatian drivers do not reach the ears of those responsible in the capital.

For this reason, the leadership of the Initiative have decided to take advantage of the fact that Croatian president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović has chosen Split as her summer residence and have invited her to come to Omiš without police escort.

Here is their letter in full:

Dear Madam President,

Citizens’ Initiative for the Road Between Trogir and Omiš respectfully invites you this Friday to come to Makarska. We invite you to travel from your residence in Split in a regular car without special police escort, so that you personally experience the journey through that short 25-kilometre section, which sometimes lasts for several hours.

The transport junction in Stobreč is the busiest in the country, while the road section to Omiš is used daily by more than 60,000 vehicles, which is more than the number of cars which passes through the Lučko toll station. This road is used by more than half a million residents and it is for us the only link with vitally necessary services, hospitals, schools, workplaces.

We invite you to try for just a day what tourists experience daily during the season, and what local residents experience throughout the year.

During the summer, we are ashamed and embarrassed because we have been waiting for this road for more than 30 years and every year again and again we have to justify to our guests why nothing was done. In the meantime, states, governments, ministers have come and gone, but the promise of construction has remained a pipe dream.

We hope that you will accept our invitation and help us so that the construction of the road Trogir-Omiš, and especially the part between Stobreč to Omiš, finally starts.
