An ombudswoman for Split.

Starting yesterday, all those who have a need to ask for help about their rights can contact the Local Office of the Ombudswoman in Split, which was officially opened on September 21, 2015 at Mažuranićevo Šetalište 8a, reports Slobodna Dalmacija.

Health care, social care, municipal services, discrimination, labour relations, conduct of police officers, minority rights and the rights of persons deprived of their liberty are just some of the problems for which citizens can turn to the ombudswoman in person, by mail, e-mail or fax, and their complaints will be received by two employees.

“The opening of the office in Split will make the democratic institution of the ombudswoman more accessible to the citizens of Split, the whole Split-Dalmatia County and other counties in southern Croatia, and thus contribute to improving their human rights. It will also establish a concrete link between citizens, the state authorities and the entire local community. Although the decisions are not binding, the ombudswoman sends recommendations, opinions, suggestions and warnings to the competent authorities. On the very first day, we have already talked with one citizen. We invite others to contact us”, said the ombudswoman Lora Vidović at the opening of the office which is located in the centre of the city, so that it would be more accessible to everyone.

The official opening was witnessed by the mayor of Split Ivo Baldasar and the Split-Dalmatia County prefect Zlatko Ževrnja, who have until now received the various complaints of citizens. They said that, with the new ombudswoman’s office in Split, their own offices will provide even better service to the citizens.

Đordana Barbarić, the president of the MoST Association, has been named to the Council of the Ombudswoman for Human Rights . Her association has been for many years in direct contact with various categories of people whose human rights are threatened or violated. She stressed the importance of the opening of ombudswoman’s office whose goal is to eliminate all forms of discrimination.
