The fleeing car landed in a 20-metre deep ravine near Kraljev Jarak and Rogozno, on the old road through Gorski Kotar, in the hinterland of Rijeka nearly 40 minutes after it passed through the road barrier. Police were informed about the accident by the ambulance at about 1.10 p.m. In addition to the persons who died, there were a few injured persons in the car. Police said that the search for the person suspected of driving the car was ongoing.
For now, it has been determined that the cause of the accident was the driving speed and the wet road.
On the Rijeka-Zagreb motorway, at about 12.20 p.m., police officers tried to stop the car, which had foreign licence plates, as part of intensified surveillance of illegal migrations. The car did not stop and it went through the barrier at the exit near Delnice.
The place of the accident is about 15 kilometres away from the toll station.
All injured persons received aid.
