October the 10th, 2024 – Croatian PM Andrej Plenković and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have signed a long-term cooperation and support agreement as part of the Ukrainian president’s visit to Dubrovnik.

Few countries can understand the depth of Ukraine’s pain quite like Croatia can. In eerily similar positions as nations threatened by foreign aggressors driven by crackpot ideas, Croatia has offered unwavering support for Ukraine since the very first day of the war.

The country was uncharacteristically quick in creating a model to welcome Ukrainian refugees to Croatia and allow them to legally set themselves up economically and otherwise, and despite President Zoran Milanovic’s often bizarre statements about Russia and Ukraine, the official position of the country has always been exceptionally pro-Ukraine, with sanctions against Russia invoked immediately.

It should come as no surprise therefore that Plenković and Zelenskyy had no issues to overcome when signing a long-term agreement on ongoing support and cooperation, with Croatia’s full and vocal support of Ukraine’s EU path.

As Morski writes, back in the dark days of the early 1990s, when Croatia was engulfed in war following Greater Serbian aggression and the collapse of Yugoslavia, Ukraine was quick to recognise independent Croatia.

“We signed an agreement on long-term cooperation and support with the Ukrainian president. We’re transferring the unique experiences of Croatia in the field of humanitarian de-mining, the prosecution of war crimes and care for war veterans, as well as the accession process, to Ukraine.

Baxk during the early 1990s, Ukraine recognised the Republic of Croatia, and today Croatia is defends Ukraine’s right to freedom. We continue to provide political, humanitarian, economic and military aid, and strongly support Ukraine’s European path,” announced Plenković on Twitter.
