Fresh from putting a British tabloid in its place, Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic proclaims Croatia’s border control system to be flawless.
Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojić, responding on Tuesday to questions posed by Twitter users, said there were no problems with the management of the migration crisis in Croatia and added that Croatia in just one hour could register about 1,000 people, thanks to experienced professionals and good equipment, reports Index.hr, 24Sata and Vecernji List on December 9, 2015.
He said that Croatia is a country which is registering migrants, but which will not become a “hot spot”. Persons who do not have personal documents receive temporary documents and must leave Croatia. He added that Croatia is ready to immediately accept the agreed quotas and can start with the integration of 1,640 people, but only 18 people have so far applied for asylum in Croatia. Migrants want to go to Germany, Sweden and Finland, he said, adding that about 70 percent of migrants are from Syria and the rest are from Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.
Asked about the relationship with President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović, whose attitude towards migrants is different from his, Ostojić said that even the President’s advisor Mate Granić commented that Croatia is the best organized country on the migration route. “We have no problems in the management of migration flows”, said Ostojić. Asked about the protection from terrorists in the region, he said that the best protection is cooperation with the authorities of neighbouring countries. The risk of terrorism is a problem for all countries, he said and warned that the goal of “Caliphate” is to make people think that all migrants fleeing war are terrorists. But, a humane attitude towards them, without wires and tensions, is a guarantee that these people will be less prone to terrorism.
He also commented on the apology by British tabloid The Sun. “It was clear they would retract the story because it was false, and I am particularly pleased for the Croatian police which is doing a very good job. They tried to portray Croatia as a country which does not respect the rules, but our border control system is flawless”, Ostojić said.
From midnight to 9 pm on Tuesday, 4,335 migrants entered Croatia. There are 1,078 people accommodated at the temporary refugee centre in Slavonski Brod. Since the beginning of the migration crisis, 483,299 migrants and refugees have passed through Croatia.
Slovenia remains a credible member of the European and international integrations and will not allow to be excluded from any of them, Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar said regarding speculation that Slovenia could be expelled from the Schengen Area. “I will not allow any exclusion of our country”, Cerar said after a regular meeting with President Borut Pahor and Parliament Speaker Milan Brglez which was devoted to issues of economic recovery and national security. Cerar and Pahor agreed that Slovenia has managed to cope with the wave of refugees, refusing claims from the party of former Prime Minister Janez Janša that it was too late in putting up the wire fence on its border towards Croatia.
As expected, three weeks before the end of the year Germany officially registered its millionth refugee. Some believe that the actual number of refugees in Germany is even higher. Others believe that the number is actually smaller because some refugees have been registered more than once. At the end of November, 965,000 refugees were registered in Germany. However, in the last few days, the flow of refugees has decreased. The slowdown is likely a consequence of the fact that Hungary, Slovenia and Macedonia have raised fences on their borders. Austria has also announced that it would starting putting up a fence on its border with Slovenia.
