Destruction of Synagogue in Split Commemorated with Plaque

ZAGREB, June 12, 2018 – A bronze memorial plaque was unveiled in Split’s main square, Pjaca, on Tuesday to commemorate 12 June 1942, when the Jewish Synagogue in this southern coastal city was devastated.

Split Mayor Andro Krstulović Opara said the memorial plaque was erected for the sake of Split residents so that they become aware of this event that was repressed from their memory and that it must never happen again. This is why the plaque is placed on the ground, in the heart of the city, at the spot at which a great tragedy took place 76 years ago, caused by hatred and evil, the Split mayor said.

The president of the Jewish Community in Split Ana Lebl said the plaque was put there to commemorate the event that took place on this day in 1942, when a group of fascists devastated the synagogue, stole artefacts and set the rest on fire.

The ceremony was also attended by Israeli Ambassador to Croatia Zina Kalay Kleitman.
