Mato Franković: ”Thanks To Our Defenders, Today We Live In A Free Croatia”

Lauren Simmonds

Dubrovnik’s Mayor Mato Franković extends his message of congratulations to Dubrovnik’s brave defenders.

Dubrovnik’s popular young Mayor is among the first to defend patriotism, and in his message to mark Croatia’s Independence Day, on which it cut ties with Yugoslavia, he extends his congratulations and admiration to the brave defenders of the Pearl of the Adriatic for the incredible sacrifices they and their families made:

”26 years ago, the historic decision of the Croatian Parliament was made, by which we became an independent and sovereign state.

By marking Independence Day, we remember the long and bloody path that we had to take to reach the fulfillment of the centuries-old dream of the Croatian people to have an independent, free and democratic state.

Let us not forget that this October, we mark the anniversary of the Military Ordinance Operation “Liberation of the South of Croatia”. Therefore, with a special reverence, we remember of all our defenders, of all the civilians killed, and let us not forget the greatest of sacrifices submitted by them and their families.

Thanks to their sacrifice and the sacrifices of all our patriots and heroes, we live, grow up and work in a free and democratic Republic of Croatia which has grown into a respected member of international organisations and institutions for 26 years.

On behalf of the employees of the City of Dubrovnik and myself personally, I pass on my sincere congratulations on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Croatia.

Mayor Mato Franković”
