ZAGREB, April 14, 2018 – A monument commemorating Bosniak Muslims killed while defending Croatia during the country’s war of independence was unveiled at the town cemetery in Sisak on Saturday.
Some 30,000 Bosniak Muslims fought in the 1991-1995 Homeland War, of whom 1,187 gave their lives for Croatia’s freedom, the ceremony was told.
Assistant Defence Minister Dinko Tandara thanked the Bosniaks for their contribution to the war effort.
The head of the Sisak-Moslavina County association of Bosniak veterans of the Homeland War Hamzlija Hafizović warned that Bosniak veterans were not treated the same as Croat veterans. He said that many Bosniaks had held senior command positions in the war but none has been promoted to the rank of a general.
