ZAGREB, March 23, 2018 – Member of Parliament Milorad Pupovac of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) said in the parliament on Friday that a part of MPs were exposed to pressures and threats due to their position on the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

“We have been hearing that some of our colleagues have received messages that constitute not only pressure, but also a type of threat, due to their beliefs and positions as MPs and their plan to support the ratification of the Istanbul Convention,” said Pupovac.

He stressed that, as nobody should violate other people’s privacy or question religious beliefs, so MPs should be let make decisions in line with their conscience.

After Pupovac’s statement, MP Ivan Ćelić of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) started shouting while MOST MP Miro Bulj said that HDZ members were being threatened with “excommunication” from the party over the Istanbul Convention.
