Opposition Demands Early Dissolution of Parliament

ZAGREB, May 16, 2018 – The leader of Croatia’s strongest opposition party, the Social Democrats (SDP), said on Tuesday after a special meeting of the party’s leadership that “a state of emergency is in force” in the country and called for “dissolution of parliament and elections.”

“Yesterday it became clear that Prime Minister Andrej Plenković is deeply involved in the Agrokor affair, or rather in siphoning 500 million kuna out of the conglomerate. There was trading in insider information and individuals were accorded preferential treatment, which is punishable under law as misuse of position and powers. Those who were aware of those offences and kept quiet also committed a criminal offence. If Economy Minister Martina Dalić had to go, we are rightfully asking why the State Prosecutor hasn’t taken any action yet. Did the state institutions fail and was any political pressure exerted on them?” SDP leader Davor Bernardić told the press.

“There is evident chaos in the country caused by the Plenković government. The country is ruled by nepotism, corruption, crime and hatred towards people of different ethnic, religious or other backgrounds. That is why for us in the SDP a state of emergency is in force in Croatia and we demand dissolution of parliament and elections,” Bernardić said.
