Parliament Approves New Ministers

ZAGREB, May 25, 2018 – The Croatian parliament on Friday confirmed the nomination of Tomislav Tolušić and Darko Horvat as Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister respectively, but before the vote several opposition parliamentary groups had requested a recess because Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) leader Krešo Beljak asked for a security check for the future economy minister.

“I am requesting a recess so that relevant bodies can run a security check on the future minister Horvat who, when asked recently by reporters how he will handle attacks coming from the opposition, said that he has a weapon. I ask that we all see ourselves out so that all MPs, notably Horvat, can go through a metal detector,” Beljak said.

“Everyone should go through the metal detector, who knows what would be found,” Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković responded jokingly.

Gordan Maras of the SDP once again called on Prime Minister Andrej Plenković to step down and Ivan Vilibor Sinčić of the Živi Zid party called on MPs to stop “the corruption train which is accelerating.”

The new ministers were confirmed with 77 votes in favour, one more than the absolute minimum for the majority.
