ZAGREB, June 2, 2018 – Prime Minister Andrej Plenković on Friday received for talks President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Michele Nicoletti and informed him of the priorities of Croatia’s six-month presidency of the Council of Europe, noting that Croatia would work to contribute to overcoming problems the organisation was currently faced with, the government said in a statement.

Nicoletti is visiting Zagreb for a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly in the Croatian parliament, which is part of Croatia’s presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe which it took over from Denmark on May 18.

Expressing satisfaction with Croatia’s taking over chairmanship of the Council of Europe, Plenković said the four priorities of its presidency were the fight against corruption and organised crime, efficient protection of ethnic minorities and other vulnerable social groups, strengthening local and regional government, and protection and promotion of cultural heritage.

Nicoletti commended Croatia’s excellent organisation of the Parliamentary Assembly’s meeting in Zagreb, noting that Croatia had taken over the presidency of the Council of Europe in turbulent times, with many challenges facing the Council.

Plenković said that as the presiding country Croatia would work to promote dialogue and contribute to overcoming the problems the Council of Europe was faced with.
