ZAGREB, March 10, 2018 – The Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) on Friday issued an indictment against Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) lawmaker Franjo Lučić for offering a bribe to freelance reporter Drago Hedl in a bid to persuade the reporter to stop writing about his companies.
According to the indictment, on 26 July 2017 Lučić offered a monetary reward to Hedl in return for scrapping the planned article on business and financial transactions of his companies.
Hedl said Lučić had offered him a reward three times as high as the amount of money he was normally paid by his media organisation if he stopped writing about the financial transactions of Lučić’s companies because they harmed his reputation.
Lučić denied any wrongdoing and said he and his family had been subjected to smear campaigns for years.
USKOK launched the investigation after the parliamentary credentials and privileges commission stripped Lučić of immunity from criminal persecution following the accusations made by Hedl.
