SDP Intraparty Elections Nearing Culmination

Komadina’s team claims advantage over Milanović in delegate count

While the public spotlight is focused on the elections for SDP president and the two candidates Zoran Milanović and Zlatko Komadina, in the last few days another competition between their allies has been taking place. Party branches are choosing delegates for the national party convention which will take place separately from the elections for the party president, reports Jutarnji List on March 16, 2016.

And something quite interesting is happening – Komadina’s faction is reportedly winning more delegates than Milanović’s. The culmination happened two days ago in Zagreb where elections took place in six local branches. The results were very interesting and suggest whom SDP members in Zagreb are likely to support. Out of the 139 elected delegates, one hundred belong to Davor Bernardić’s faction, which means they support Zlatko Komadina for party president. Milanović has received only the remaining 39 delegates. The Zagreb party organization is the largest in the country and will send a total of 240 delegates to the convention held on 16 April.

The convention will gather a total of 2,288 delegates, including 645 officials who do not have to be elected. Most of them will probably support Milanović, who had the greatest influence on the selection of party officials during the last nine years. That is the reason why his opponents, led by Komadina and Bernardić, have decided to concentrate on the remaining 1,643 delegates. And members of that group claim they have substantially more support than Milanović.

Although these numbers should be treated with caution, it seems that a large part of SDP thinks that Milanović is no longer capable of leading the party and want a change. In any case, SDP will definitely have to choose one side. Inside the party, there is an unprecedented hostility. The red line was crossed over the weekend when someone released a transcript of a discussion on a closed Facebook page of the team which supports Zoran Milanović. The discussion consisted of numerous curses and insults launched against Davor Bernardić.

While it is still not clear how the elections in SDP will end, it is absolutely certain that after the elections for party president on 2 April and the party convention on 16 April, SDP will never be the same.
