Serbian Man with Provocative Tattoo Attacked

Total Croatia News

The man had a tattoo mentioning Knin, a town in Croatia which used to be the epicentre of Serbian extremists.

A young man born in Knin in Croatia, who now lives in Subotica in Serbia, was attacked at Bačvice beach in Split after taking off his t-shirt and showing the tattoo of the Red Star (Crvena Zvezda) Belgrade football fan group with the “Delije Knin” inscription, reports Večernji List on July 31, 2018.

“Delije” are the fans of Red Star Belgrade, while Knin is a town in Croatia which was the “capital” for Serbian rebels in the 1990s, who tried to break away from Croatia.

Aleksandar Gundelj (27) said he was surrounded on the beach by a group of about a dozen people who started kicking and hitting him with fists and sticks, shouting: “You came here to provoke?”

He said he was attacked while taking a walk with his friend. He added that he managed to escape and tried to find refuge in a nearby cafe, but was told to leave. Eventually, he hid in the nearest building and one of the tenants called the police.

In addition to the Delije tattoo on his back, he also has a tattoo with a quote by Serbian Emperor Lazar: “I do not decide whether to go to a battle by the force I have with me, but by the sacred goal I defend.”

He said that he had already visited Croatia before, but this was his first visit to Split. “Everything that happened was a fight for my life. When I saw that I was alone and did not have anybody to help me, I felt helpless. I’d never had a similar problem before. People told me I that I shouldn’t go for a walk with such a tattoo, but I got carried away by sea, the tourists, the atmosphere. I didn’t have any malicious intent. It wasn’t intentional, I didn’t plan for someone to kill me. Everything happened spontaneously, and when I saw them coming, I knew what was going to happen,” said Aleksandar, adding that he had no plans to return to Croatia for a vacation.

“I will certainly not give up on visiting Knin, but as far as the coast is concerned, you won’t see me there for a while,” said Aleksandar.
