Slovenia Arrests Dozens of Illegal Migrants Coming from Croatia

ZAGREB, May 28, 2018 – Four illegal migrants were found hidden among cargo in a Serbian-registered truck at the Obrežje/Bregana border crossing between Slovenia and Croatia during the night between Sunday and Monday, Slovenian police said, adding that the four were handed over to Croatian police.

Police in the border towns of Metlika and Črnomelj said they had discovered and detained 75 illegal migrants at the weekend, who were identified as nationals of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Algeria, Syria, Morocco, India and Tunisia. They were put up in a centre for asylum seekers after formally requesting international protection.

The police believe the migrants entered Slovenia by swimming across the River Kupa from Croatia or crossing the river at points where it is shallow.

Scores of illegal migrants have entered the country that way in the last few months, but the Slovenian Ministry of the Interior says they have things under control and that the situation is nowhere near as critical as it was at the time of mass-scale migrations along the Balkan route in 2016/2017.
