A Slovenian viewpoint on the controversial fence on the Croatian border.
Wire fence which the Slovenian government is constructing on the border with Croatia as protection against the uncontrolled influx of refugees was put up too late and now it has no purpose, said on Monday the leader of the opposition and former Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša. “Technical obstacles being raised have no effect because Croatia is sending the refugees and migrants by trains to Slovenia, which then sends them by trains and buses further to Austria”, Janša said at a press conference in Ljubljana, reports 24Sata and Index.hr on December 22, 2015.
Janša has repeatedly criticized Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar because he did not start constructing the wire fence on the Schengen border at the same time when Hungarian Prime Minister made the same decision. Now, he believes that razor fence on the border with Croatia has no effect because the refugees are only in transit through Slovenia.
Speaking about the razor wire fence, which has in recent days been the target of several public protests on both sides of the border, Janša said he believed that the European Union will find a common solution to stop the migrant wave and control the mass migration flows. The plans about the European agency that will protect the external borders of the EU have been made with considerable delay, after the concept of the EU has already been nearly ruined, said Janša, adding that he believed that the Schengen countries will know how to protect the external borders of the Schengen Area.
The international network of environmental organizations “Alpe Adria Green”, based in Jesenice in Slovenia, filed a criminal complaint against the Slovenian Government to the Supreme State Prosecution Office for putting wire fences on the border between Slovenia and Croatia.
They believe that “placing the barbed wire represents a crime against nature and animals, endangers biodiversity on a global level, as well as the sustainable use of natural resources, and endangers wild flora and fauna and their habitats, with special emphasis on endangered and vulnerable migratory species”.
“We remind you that people are responsible for the protection of animals, their lives and health, as well as their welfare. Slovenian Government is placing barbed wire on the border with Croatia and is violating international agreements and Slovenian laws. They should bear criminal responsibility”, the statement reads.
The statement goes on to stress that the organizations gathered in the “Alpe Adria Green” will continue to fight by all legal means, in order for the morally unacceptable act of setting an extremely dangerous wire barriers on the border between Slovenia and Croatia to become history as soon as possible.
