Unemployment Numbers Continue to Decrease

A closer look at the latest unemployment figures.

At the end of July, there were 257,994 registered unemployed persons in Croatia, which is 0.8 percent or 2,079 persons less than at the end of June, and 12.9 percent or 38,100 persons less than in July 2014, according to the Croatian Employment Service. July was the fifth consecutive month with a reduction to the unemployment numbers on a monthly basis, reports Novi List on August 11, 2015.

According to the daily data, the number of unemployed on Monday afternoon stood at 257,920. At the same time, there were 7,152 officially registered open positions in companies. In July, 29,720 persons stopped being registered as unemployed, which is 17 percent less than in July 2014.

In July, 20,066 unemployed persons found new jobs. The new jobs were mostly opened in sectors providing accommodation and food services, followed by the wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, administrative and support service activities, and construction.

By counties, the new employment in July was led by Split-Dalmatia County (2,314 newly employed), Osijek-Baranja County (2,094), the City of Zagreb (1,973) and Vukovar-Srijem County (1,148 persons).

Out of the total number of unemployed, women make up 54.6 percent and men 45.4 percent. Compared to the same month last year, the share of unemployed women has increased, while the share of men fell by 1.2 percentage points. As far as age structure is concerned, largest share of the unemployed is aged between 25 and 34 (22.4 percent) and between 45 and 54 (22.1 percent).

Persons with high school education constitute the majority of unemployed (59.6 percent). People with lower education make up 26.8 percent, while those with college degrees and higher level education make up 13.6 percent of the total number of unemployed.

In July, 40,848 persons or 15.8 percent of the total number of unemployed received unemployment benefits, which is 15.8 percent less compared to the same month last year.

The largest absolute number of registered unemployed persons live in Zagreb (37,366), Split-Dalmatia County (34,565) and Osijek-Baranja County (29,793), while the smallest number live in Lika-Senj County (2,945).
