Croatia to be the new EU front line in the migrant crisis?
International media is reporting on September 16, 2015 that a new route to destinations such as Germany and Sweden is being tried by migrants in the aftermath of Hungary’s border wall and new migrant laws – Croatia.
The youngest EU state (it joined in 2013) is not yet part of the Schengen agreement, but the first migrants have been bused to the Serbian town of Sid, with some 100 crossing into Croatia, whose Schengen border with Slovenia is the goal. Croatia has said that it will not simply allow migrants to walk through the country, and the first arrivals have been met by Croatian police and taken away to be registered.
Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said on Tuesday that Zagreb had prepared an “emergency plan in the case of an influx of thousands of refugees”, but did not give details.
“The government will quickly activate that emergency plan if need be,” Ostojic said.
The situation is fast-changing, but less than two weeks ago, as reported by TCN, Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said that he did not believe in border fences.
